Feeding Communities, Reducing Waste: The Future of Food Security and Sustainability
How local action can support food security and reduce food waste.
With food insecurity effecting many households and significant volumes of edible food still lost in supply chains this event will focus on practical, place-based solutions that connect surplus food, community needs, sustainability education, circular economy initiatives and the importance of partnership in finding solutions.
We warmly invite you to join us at this event for an afternoon of thought-provoking conversation, connection and inspiration.
Panelists:
Anthony Boyd, CEO, Sydney Markets
Anthony Boyd brings more than 30 years of experience across listed multinationals and organisations in real estate, investment, infrastructure and logistics. He is currently the Chair of Green Building Council Australia and CEO of Sydney Markets. More than 2000 businesses operate from the sites, supplied by growers from across Australia, selling fresh fruit, vegetables and cut flowers to florists, fruit retailers and consumers. Sydney Markets is a leader in recycling and reducing food waste, achieving upwards of 70% recycling of all waste on-site. Food initiatives include diverting fresh fruit and vegetables to Foodbank and SecondBite, sending tonnage to farmers for livestock feed, and an onsite anaerobic digester producing power and fertiliser.
Jason Yat-Sen Li MP, State Member for Strathfield, NSW Parliament
Jason Yan-Sen Li MP, the State Member for Strathfield in the NSW Parliament, focuses heavily on food security, reducing food waste, and cost-of-living relief within his community and the broader New South Wales region. He heavily supports NSW Government grants aimed at diverting edible food from landfills to families in need. He frequently emphasizes that "every meal rescued is a lifeline for someone doing it tough." He is an active advocate for programs that bridge the gap between environmental sustainability and food relief including supporting grassroots volunteering initiatives, such as the Strathfield Harvest Helpers, where volunteers collect rescued food to assist vulnerable community members.
