2023 Inaugural Professorial Lecture Series

Join Provost Professor Meg Stuart, either in person in Melbourne or online, to celebrate and acknowledge two colleagues promoted to Professor in the most recent Academic Promotions round.

The Professorial Lecture Series is a new initiative arising from the review of the Academic Promotions Policy and Procedures and is designed to provide the University community an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge those promoted to Professor.

The 2023 Inaugural Professorial Lecture Series celebrates the success of Professor Robyn Horner and Professor Samuel Baron, both from the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy, in the 2022 Academic Promotions round.

Join Professor Meg Stuart to hear our colleagues speak about their teaching, research and service, have the opportunity to ask each presenter questions and remain afterwards for light refreshments. All staff are welcome and encouraged to attend. Come along and learn about the interesting and impactful work being undertaken by our newest professors.

The Inaugural Professorial lecture will be taking place in person and online. If you are based in Melbourne, you are invited to attend in person in the The Greg Craven Centre. It is important that you RSVP for catering purposes but you can change your RSVP up until 22 June 2023.

If you are unable to attend in person or are based interstate, you are invited to attend via Teams and a link will be sent to you in the week leading up to the Inaugural lecture.

Professor Sam Baron - "Explainable AI: Opportunities and Challenges"
Sam Baron is a professor in the Dianoia Institute of Philosophy. His research focuses on the metaphysics of science, with a particular emphasis on space, time, causation and explanation. He has published widely on these topics and, in 2022, released a monograph which explores the idea that time does not exist. His media work includes 19 articles and a readership of 2.7 million, and he occasionally moonlights as a producer for ABC Radio National. In 2022 his work on timelessness was retweeted by cult figure MC Hammer, who, though broadly sympathetic, stated a preference for 'hammertime'.

Professor Robyn Horner - "“The Experience of God"
Professor Robyn Horner is a teaching and research academic within the School of Theology, and a member of the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry (IRCI) at Australian Catholic University. From 2010-2015, she held the position of Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) of the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy.
Formerly a teacher in Catholic primary and secondary schools and a liturgical musician and composer, she has two main areas of theological research expertise. First, she investigates theological questions in ways that speak in and to the contemporary context, using hermeneutic phenomenology and poststructuralism. Second, she has expertise in the theology of recontextualisation and the promotion of the Catholic dialogue school. This is fundamental to her teaching and to the research translation she undertakes in consultancies around Australia.

Robyn Horner is the author of The Experience of God: The Event of Revelation. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2022; Jean-Luc Marion: A Theo-Logical Introduction. Aldershot, Hants: Ashgate, 2005; Rethinking God as Gift: Marion, Derrida and the Limits of Phenomenology. New York: Fordham University Press, 2001 and numerous journal articles, book chapters and compositions. https://acu-au.academia.edu/RobynHorner
